The whole chair turns on one joint. The backrest leans back, meets the rear leg, and the two are cut into each other with a mortise-and-tenon shaped specifically for the angle. It carries the load and it is the thing your eye goes to. Nothing else is asked to do much. That is why it reads as light for a chair with no upholstery and a solid timber frame. Two versions, and they are genuinely different rooms. The walnut is warmer and shows more figure. The black-stained ash almost disappears, which is the one we would put against a pale plaster wall.
